Context

This fly painting is one of a suite of thirteen works Hirst made for the White Cube exhibition ‘Romance in the Age of Uncertainty’ (2003). The paintings provided an apocalyptic vision of modern-day plagues and accompanied works titled: ‘Smallpox’, ‘Tuberculosis’, ‘Bubonic Plague’, ‘Leprosy’, ‘Typhoid’, ‘Syphilis’, ‘Leukaemia’, ‘Malaria’, ‘Ebola’, ‘Meningitis’, ‘Aids’ and ‘Septicaemia’.
