In June 2012 over 150 children from around the UK were given the unique opportunity to make spin paintings in the style of Hirst’s own iconic series, with the help of the artist and Kids Company founder Camila Batmanghelidjh. Two paintings made by Hirst and Batmanghelidjh at the event were auctioned last night to raise proceeds for the charity, and surpassed all estimates. The two spins are entitled in the tradition of the spin series as, ‘Beautiful Covent Garden Heart Spin Painting for Kids Co’ (2012) and ‘Beautiful Covent Garden Skull Spin Painting for Kids Co’ (2012)
A longtime advocate of Kids Company’s use of art therapy, Hirst describes the spin paintings as a “massive explosion of energy, full of life, colour and optimism”. The schoolchildren in attendance at the event were aged between 7 and 11 and were the successful entrants into a competition initiated by Tate Modern. Hirst has been a supporter of Kids Company's work with vulnerable children and young people for years and previously auctioned work for the charity at the groundbreaking 2008 Sotheby’s auction ‘Beautiful Inside My Head Forever’.
This film was made by Nathalie Murphy who herself received invaluable support from Kids Company in her youth. With the charity's guidance and encouragement, Nathalie completed a degree in theatre and performance studies and is now in the process of establishing herself as a talented film maker. She is currently working with Kids Company in making fundraising films with the support of producer and musician, Will Cattermole.
