‘Isolated Elements’ (2015), a large-scale photographic mural produced by Damien Hirst has been installed on the exterior of Otium, a new Bill Chait’s Sprout L.A. restaurant collaboration set to open in October adjacent to The Broad in Los Angeles.
The work measures over 9 x 25 metres and is based on Hirst’s pair of sculptures ‘Isolated Elements Swimming in the Same Direction for the Purpose of Understanding’ (Left) and (Right) (1991). The cabinets, which contain 38 varieties of fish, sourced by Hirst from Billingsgate market, are one of the first examples of the artist's use of animals preserved in formaldehyde.
Early in Otium’s development Chait approached The Broad to collaborate on identifying a large-scale mural to link the restaurant building to its arts institution neighbour. Joanne Heyler, founding director of The Broad states: 'Our approach to Otium since its earliest days has been to highlight our partnership with and adjacency to The Broad and to create links wherever possible to the artistic community in Los Angeles and on Grand Avenue,' said Bill Chait, managing partner of Sprout L.A., the restaurant owner of Otium. 'Having a mural of a work on the façade by a major contemporary artist underscores that connection, and we were thrilled that Damien Hirst was interested in having his work featured. We think it is the ideal work for the exterior, both beautiful and provocative.'
The Broad collection has a long relationship with the artist. Major works by Damien Hirst will be on view in The Broad museum’s inaugural installation, including sculptures 'Away from the Flock', 1994, 'Something Solid Beneath the Surface of all Creatures Great and Small', 2001, and painting 'Chlorpropamide' (1996). The museum’s collection includes 14 works by Hirst. The freestanding restaurant is in the final stages of its construction and is scheduled to open this month.
